What is identity verification?
Identity verification is a process we use to confirm your identity to ensure safety on the platform. It also helps us comply with legal requirements related to the buying and selling of firearms.
Why is identity verification important?
Gunfinder is an open marketplace – you can also post listings without verification. For security reasons, however: As long as you haven’t completed identity verification, you can see messages from interested buyers and get notified about them, but you can’t reply. This protects all users from fraud attempts. Once verified, you build trust, can contact interested buyers directly, and generally sell more easily.
Does the identity check replace age verification?
No. The check only confirms that you are the person specified – not your age. For items with an age restriction of 18 and over, age verification remains mandatory.
How does the identity verification work and what do I need?
You must be registered and logged into your account. For the verification, you need your ID card or passport and a device with a camera (laptop, tablet, or smartphone). The process via our partner Veriff:
- Hold the front of your ID in front of the camera.
- Hold the back in front of the camera.
- Take a selfie with the ID in your hand. Done.
Is my identity verification secure?
Yes. Your data and documents are transmitted securely and stored in compliance with GDPR. We adhere to strict privacy policies and use modern encryption to protect your data.
What to do if the verification fails?
Pay attention to a few details when taking the shots:
- Use the highest camera resolution.
- Ensure good daylight and avoid reflections, glare, and backlight on the camera and ID.

Do I have to complete the verification if I just want to browse?
No. Identity verification is only required if you are selling commercially or want to sell an item privately. You can browse without verification. However, we strongly recommend verification if you want to make a transaction.
