Carabina m1 produzione National Postal meter calibro 30m1, prodotta nel maggio del 1943.
Culatta National Postal Meter, canna Inland
La National Postal Meter fu una delle aziende incaricate di produrre la carabina M1 durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, nonostante non avesse esperienza pregressa nella fabbricazione di armi. Famosa per la produzione di macchinari postali, ricevette il contratto nell’aprile del 1942. Grazie alla collaborazione con numerosi subfornitori, l’azienda produsse circa 413.017 carabine M1 entro il 1944. Le canne erano principalmente fornite da Underwood, e altre parti venivano realizzate da diverse società, tra cui Trimble Nurseryland, che produceva i calci e le impugnature.
Oltre alla National Postal Meter, diverse altre aziende civili vennero incaricate di produrre la carabina M1 per le forze armate statunitensi durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, vista la crescente domanda. Tra i principali produttori figuravano:
Winchester, il più famoso e uno dei primi a produrre il modello M1.
Inland Manufacturing, divisione di General Motors, che realizzò il maggior numero di carabine.
IBM, che si occupava principalmente di componenti.
Rock-Ola, un produttore di jukebox.
Underwood, famosa per macchine da scrivere e produzione di canne per le carabine.
Queste aziende, con poca o nessuna esperienza nel campo bellico, dimostrarono un notevole adattamento per soddisfare le necessità militari.
