The secret of GORE-TEX laminates lies in their revolutionary two-component membrane. The expanded PTFE layer contains approximately 1.4 billion microscopic pores per square centimeter. These pores are about 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water, but 700 times larger than a water vapor molecule. This means that while water droplets cannot penetrate the GORE-TEX membrane, water vapor—that is, sweat in gaseous form—can escape easily. The ePTFE structure also contains an oleophobic element (oil-resistant) that prevents substances such as oils, cosmetics, insect repellents or food substances from entering without obstructing the passage of water vapor. The result is a barrier that is completely waterproof, windproof and breathable.

Questi pori sono circa 20.000 volte più piccoli di una goccia d’acqua, ma 700 volte più grandi di una molecola di vapore acqueo. Così, mentre le gocce d’acqua non possono penetrare nella membrana GORE-TEX, il vapore acqueo, cioè il sudore in forma gassosa, fuoriesce facilmente.
