Application of the CAT® Tourniquet: Step by step to a lifesaver
The correct application of a tourniquet should always be trained. However, in an absolute emergency, when other measures such as a pressure bandage fail, anyone can effectively use the CAT®. It can even be applied one-handed!
- Preparation: Open the CAT® so that the strap forms an O-shaped loop. Then place it above the bleeding, towards the torso, on the injured extremity.
- Tight application: Pull the strap tight enough that a maximum of two fingertips fit between the tourniquet and the extremity. Then firmly connect the Velcro surfaces together.
- Pressure build-up: Turn the knob until the bleeding stops and the pulse below the wound site is no longer palpable.
- Securing: Secure the knob under the clamp hook. Check bleeding and pulse again; if necessary, increase pressure by further turning the knob.
- Final fixation & documentation: Lay the end of the strap over the knob and clamp hook and secure both with the securing Velcro. If possible, note the time of application.

Anwendung des CAT® Tourniquets: Schritt für Schritt zum Lebensretter
Die korrekte Anwendung eines Tourniquets sollte stets geschult werden. Doch im absoluten Notfall, wenn andere Maßnahmen wie ein Druckverband versagen, kann jeder das CAT® effektiv einsetzen. Es ist sogar einhändig anlegbar!
Vorbereitung: Schlagen Sie das CAT® so auf, dass der Gurt eine O-förmige Schlaufe bildet. Legen Sie es dann oberhalb der Blutung, in Richtung des Rumpfes, an die verletzte Extremität an.
Straffes Anlegen: Ziehen Sie den Gurt so fest an, dass maximal zwei Fingerspitzen zwischen Tourniquet und Extremität passen. Verbinden Sie anschließend die Klettflächen fest miteinander.
Druckaufbau: Drehen Sie den Knebel, bis die Blutung stoppt und der Puls unterhalb der Wundstelle nicht mehr tastbar ist.
Sicherung: Sichern Sie den Knebel unter dem Klemmhaken. Überprüfen Sie erneut Blutung und Puls; erhöhen Sie bei Bedarf den Druck durch weiteres Drehen des Knebels.
Endfixierung & Dokumentation: Legen Sie das Gurtende über Knebel und Klemmhaken und fixieren Sie beides mit dem Sicherungsklett. Notieren Sie wenn möglich die Uhrzeit der Anbringung.
