Winchester's Model 1873 was the "rifle that won the West." The Model 1873 was designed for a new, more powerful cartridge, the .44/40, a bullet in .44 caliber propelled by 40 grains of black powder. An important factor that truly secured the success of the 1873 was that Colt quickly responded and offered its frontier six-shooter in .44/40 caliber. A cowboy could have both a lever-action rifle and his "Peacemaker" and only needed one cartridge belt. Buffalo Bill Cody carried a 1873 and a pair of .44/40 Colts with him in 1876 when he worked as an Army scout. Chappo, the son of Apache war chief Geronimo, carried a 1873, as did most Texas Rangers and every real cowboy of the Wild West. Uberti has replicated the 1873 in five distinctive models, including the 1873 Carbine and the Special Sporting Rifle.
The 1873 Brush Popper features an 18-inch long, round, half-octagonal barrel.

Das Modell 1873 war für eine neue, stärkere Patrone, das .44/40, eingerichtet – ein Geschoss im Kaliber .44, das von 40 Grains Schwarzpulver angetrieben wurde. Ein wichtiger Faktor, der den Erfolg des 1873 jedoch wirklich sicherte, war, dass Colt schnell reagierte und seinen Grenz-Sechsschüsser im Kaliber .44/40 anbot. Ein Cowboy konnte sowohl ein Unterhebelrepetierergewehr als auch seinen „Peacemaker“ haben und brauchte nur ein Patronengurt. Buffalo Bill Cody trug 1876, als er als Army-Scout arbeitete, ein 1873 und ein Paar Colts im Kaliber .44/40 bei sich. Chappo, der Sohn des Apache-Kriegshäuptlings Geronimo, trug ein 1873 bei sich, wie die meisten Texas Rangers und jeder echte Cowboy des Wilden Westens.
