As a hunting cartridge, the .308 Win. is excellently suited for medium-sized game up to medium red and black game. The strengths of the cartridge lie in its high versatility, high inherent precision, and pleasant shooting behavior.
Due to the high precision of the .308 Win., it is also well-suited for competitive shooting at long distances.
The cartridge replaced the .30-06 Springfield as the standard military cartridge in the USA, and NATO has also adopted this cartridge. It was available as a civilian cartridge almost simultaneously.
The .308 Win. is not only used in bolt-action rifles but is also excellent for semi-automatic rifles.
RWS Short Rifle cartridges in caliber .308 Win.:
Short, handy barrels are increasingly gaining popularity among hunters. This trend is supported by the more frequent use of suppressors. Standard ammunition is designed for common barrel lengths of 600 mm. When firing standard ammunition from short barrels (420 mm to 550 mm), the following disadvantages become apparent: energy and velocity loss, limited effectiveness, pronounced muzzle flash, loud muzzle report, and increased wear on suppressors.
Therefore, RWS has developed the Short Rifle cartridge, which is specifically optimized for use in short barrels. In practice, this means shooting from short barrels without loss of performance.

Als Jagdpatrone ist die .308 Win. für mittelschweres Wild bis hin zu mittlerem Rot- und Schwarzwild vorzüglich geeignet. Die Stärken der Patrone liegen in der hohen Universalität, der hohen Eigenpräzision und dem angenehmen Schussverhalten.
Aufgrund der hohen Präzision der .308 Win. ist sie auch bestens für das sportliche Schießen auf weite Distanzen geeignet.
Die Patrone löste in den USA die .30-06 Springfield als Ordonnanzpatrone ab und auch die NATO hat diese Patrone übernommen. Als Zivilpatrone war sie nahezu zeitgleich erhältlich.
Die .308 Win. ist neben der Verwendung in Repetierern auch hervorragend für Selbstladebüchsen geeignet.

Zunehmend gewinnen kurze, führige Läufe an Beliebtheit in der Jägerschaft. Dieser Trend wird durch die immer häufigere Verwendung von Schalldämpfern unterstützt. Standardmunition ist auf gängige Lauflängen von 600 mm ausgelegt. Beim Verschießen von Standardmunition aus kurzen Läufen (420 mm bis 550 mm) zeigen sich folgende Nachteile: Energie- und Geschwindigkeitsverlust, eingeschränkte Wirksamkeit, ausgeprägtes Mündungsfeuer, lauter Mündungsknall und erhöhte Abnutzung bei Schalldämpfern.
RWS hat deshalb mit der Short Rifle eine Patrone entwickelt, die speziell für die Verwendung aus kurzen Läufen optimiert ist. In der Praxis bedeutet das: Schießen aus kurzen Läufen ohne Leistungseinbußen.
