The cartridge replaced the .30-06 Springfield as the standard military cartridge in the USA, and NATO has also adopted this cartridge. It was available as a civilian cartridge almost simultaneously.

RWS Short Rifle cartridges in caliber .308 Win.:

Short, handy barrels are increasingly gaining popularity among hunters. This trend is supported by the more frequent use of suppressors. Standard ammunition is designed for common barrel lengths of 600 mm. When firing standard ammunition from short barrels (420 mm to 550 mm), the following disadvantages become apparent: energy and velocity loss, limited effectiveness, pronounced muzzle flash, loud muzzle report, and increased wear on suppressors.
