In 1966, a variant of the Remington 700, the Model M40 XB, won the competition for a new sniper rifle for the U.S. Marine Corps (designated the M40 Sniper Rifle). It was essentially a Varmint in 7.62 x 51 caliber, with a heavy barrel, walnut stock, fixed magazine and Redfield 3–9 x 40 scope. In 1975, the improved M40A1 variant appeared, hand-fitted by military gunsmiths. The Marines now use later versions: the M40A3 and A4. Every M40 must meet the requirement of grouping five shots within a circle no larger than 76 mm at 300 yards (273 m), using factory ammunition.

The U.S. Army’s sniper rifle is the M24 SWS, one of the Remington 700’s later variants. The M24 is designed to allow the barrel to be changed to .300 Win. Mag. It is built on the 700 BDL platform, with a heavy barrel, an HS Precision polymer stock and an extended receiver. The package includes a Leupold M3 Ultra scope.

SWS – Special Weapon System

The complete set includes: the firearm, sights, a mounted Leupold Mark IV M3 scope, a case for the sights and scope, a takedown kit with tools and spare parts, a cleaning kit, a soft gun case and a Hardigg system case, a bipod and a bipod mount.

The civilian version was fully tested against the military performance requirements for the M-24, but was not subjected to cyclic testing and did not use government-supplied materials. (Show description in original language)
W 1966 roku odmiana Remingtona 700 czyli Model M40 XB  zwyciężyła w konkursie na nowy karabin wyborowy amerykańskiej piechoty morskiej (sygnatura M40 Sniper Rifle). Był to praktycznie Varmint w kal. 7,62 x 51, z ciężką lufą, łożem z orzecha, stałym magazynkiem i celownikiem optycznym Redfield 3 – 9 x 40.

Mag.

SWS – Special Weapon System
