The ELD-X® (Extremely Low Drag – eXpanding) bullet is a technologically advanced, match-precision bullet for all-around hunting, featuring the highest ballistic coefficient in its class and capable of controlled expansion at ALL practical hunting distances. All conventional polymer tips from manufacturers melt during flight. Hornady® engineers discovered that all materials used in the tips of tapered bullets with high ballistic coefficients melt and deform during flight. While this is not a major issue for medium ballistic coefficient bullets with traditional hunting ogives, aerodynamic heat reduces the ballistic coefficient and decreases accuracy, especially at long ranges (beyond 365 meters). To mitigate this effect, Hornady® identified a heat-resistant polymer and developed the patented Heat Shield® tip. This revolutionary tip creates the perfect apex for the bullet, delivering exceptionally consistent results from bullet to bullet and batch to batch. At conventional distances (0-365 m), the ELD-X® bullet is designed for continuous expansion along the entire wound channel. Upon impact, the bullet’s thin apical section collapses until it reaches the thickest part of the jacket, where the Interlock ring holds the core and jacket together. The bullet’s heaviest part then continues its path, further facilitating expansion, resulting in extremely high lethality.
