The new Aimpoint Duty RDS

Gunfinder Magazine

The Swedish company Aimpoint is a well-known pioneer in the development of red dot sights. With the new Aimpoint Duty RDS (Red Dot Sight), the company has developed a special sight for police service that is also a good choice for civilian rifle shooters. The Duty RDS impresses with its features, intuitive controls and attractive price. With its compact dimensions of 80 mm x 38 mm x 67 mm (L/W/H) and a weight of 161 grams, the Aimpoint Duty RDS is very handy and lightweight. The sight is ready for immediate use, as neither additional mounting nor tools are required.

The 39 mm high mount is already connected to the housing of the sight and the battery and tools are included. Even the hinged protective covers are already seated on the eyepiece and objective. Mounting the sight to the rifle's MIL-STD-1913 optic rail is quick and easy by tightening the clamp with the Torx T10 screw and included tool. The firing-in procedure can be done immediately and, if needed, the Aimpoint website offers a matching target for download.

The Aimpoint Duty RDS features innovative controls for adjusting the light intensity as well as elevation and windage corrections. Compared to well-known, more expensive Aimpoint red dot sights like the Micro T-2, the Duty RDS features a digital keypad on the left flank of the housing with two +/- buttons that are intuitive to use even with gloves on. There are a total of ten light intensity settings, including four night vision compatible intensities and six daylight settings. The clear, bright 2-MOA illuminated dot never over-illuminates at the properly selected light intensity and covers little target area at close as well as medium shooting distances. The elevation/side adjustment mechanisms on the Duty RDS are flush with the housing, no more miniature adjustment towers with cover caps like the Micro H-2/T-2.

The Aimpoint Duty RDS is rugged and durable. The die-forged aluminum housing is made of EN AW-6082 (material number 3.2315), a relatively new wrought light alloy with superior strength and corrosion resistance. The vibration and shock resistant illuminated dot sight is submersible to 25 meters. Powered by a CR2032 battery, the sight features "Advanced Circuit Efficiency Technology" (ACET) diode circuitry for dramatically reduced power consumption and long life. The manufacturer promises over three years of continuous operation with the Duty RDS at daylight position 7 activated, with this runtime extending at lower light intensity levels. The Aimpoint Duty RDS is fully compatible with all generations of night vision devices and can be combined with magnification modules to extend its operational range.

The Aimpoint Duty RDS is an excellent choice for law enforcement and civilian long gun shooters. It offers easy mounting, intuitive operation, high ruggedness and performance at an attractive price. The Aimpoint Duty RDS is priced at €749, which is very attractive compared to other high-quality Aimpoint red dot sights such as the Micro T-2 or Micro H-2/T-2. However, the quality and robustness of the sight come at a price, but the Duty RDS offers excellent value for money.

Overall, the Aimpoint Duty RDS is a high-quality and reliable illuminated dot sight designed specifically for law enforcement, but it is also a good choice for civilian rifle shooters. It offers quick and easy installation, intuitive operation, ten light intensity levels, long service life and is fully compatible with night vision devices and magnification modules. With an attractive price of €749, the Aimpoint Duty RDS offers excellent value for money.
