Molto in termini di stelle alleate della seconda guerra mondiale, è stato fatto anche dal “formato libero” e / o perso dall’interpretazione negli ordini sul campo e dall’alto verso il basso del promemoria, dal comando al capitano, sergente, caporale al soldato che doveva dipingere un veicolo. Tranne che dove consistevano le “linee guida” introdotte dalle truppe alleate come l’esercito americano del 1942 – AR 850-5 e alcuni manuali del Commonwealth più difficili da trovare. Prima della campagna italiana in Sicilia del 1943 “Operazione Husky” e successivamente ETO 1944 Francia, Normandia “Overlord” / D-Day. Era comune per i veicoli alleati all’estero portare una semplice stella bianca come identificatore. Ma nella polvere e nella confusione della battaglia, l’alleato o “stella americana” poteva occasionalmente essere scambiato per una croce tedesca a distanze superiori a 1000 iarde.
In effetti, le petroliere e le unità corazzate iniziarono a dipingere le stelle per evitare di diventare una vittima del “fuoco amico”, specialmente da parte delle unità aeree alleate. Il problema si fece così grave che in questo periodo fu coniato il termine “American Luftwaffe”. (Questo era un vero e proprio soprannome dato al 9° USAAF dalle truppe corazzate alleate all’epoca.) Unità esperte come il 2° Corazzato iniziarono a dipingere del tutto le loro stelle. I cerchi (amichevoli) di riconoscimento dell’aereo erano completamente intorno e ininterrotti, nonché “rotti” con 4 e 5 spazi vuoti, se erano realizzati con stampini per maschere di pittura a olio. Ci sono anche foto della seconda guerra mondiale con 8 cerchi vuoti.
