Scale check with known reference weights
RCBS 98991 Standard Scale Check Weight Set
Eight graduated test weights add up to 60.5 grain. This lets you check whether a reloading scale shows plausible values in the measurement range relevant to you or needs to be checked and reset according to the manufacturer's instructions before the next powder batch.
Dust, residues, a shifted zero point, or unfavorable environmental conditions can affect a scale reading. The RCBS standard set provides a simple cross-check with defined weights. It does not replace the scale's operating manual or a certified calibration but helps detect noticeable deviations before measurement values are accepted unchecked.
Before buying: These points decide
Test range All weights together add up to 60.5 grain. For control points above this range, the standard set is not sufficient; a larger test weight set is required.
Fine gradation Includes 0.5-, 1-, 2-, 5-, 10-, and 20-grain weights. Two 2-grain and two 20-grain weights expand the combinable test points.
Scale type Suitable for plausibility checks of mechanical or digital reloading scales, provided the scale works in grain and the chosen test value is within its capacity.
No powder substitute The weights serve exclusively as a reference for scale control. They are not dosing tools and are not placed together with powder in the weighing pan.
Fits well if: You want to regularly check typical measurement points up to 60.5 grain and detect drift or contamination early.
Fits less if: You specifically want to de
significantly higher charges, heavy bullets, or cases. For this, the separately available RCBS Deluxe Check Weight Set is intended.
What the standard set covers
2 × 20 grain: two large reference weights for combined test values up to 40 grain.
1 × 10 grain: a medium test point and building block for combinations.
1 × 5 grain: complements the gradation in the lower and middle range.
2 × 2 grain: allow test values of 2 or 4 grain among others, as well as further combinations.
1 × 1 grain: reference for small whole number steps.
1 × 0.5 grain: allows half grain steps.
Total sum: 60.5 grain.
Safe and reproducible use
Place the scale on a firm, level, and vibration-free surface. Avoid drafts, direct heat sources, and shocks.
Keep the weighing pan and contact surfaces clean. Turn on the scale or mechanically zero it and wait for the manufacturer-specified warm-up or stabilization time.
Choose a test value that fits the planned measurement task. Don’t check just one single point if you will be working over a larger range later.
Handle test weights clean and dry, preferably with suitable tweezers or only on non-critical edges. Do not leave residues, powder grains, or oils on the weights.
Place weights centrally and without impact into the empty weighing pan. Let the display stabilize and compare with the known sum.
If there is an unexpected deviation, do not just continue reloading: check zero point, cleanliness, surface, power supply, and manufacturer calibration. Repeat the measurement afterwards.
After use, count all weights completely and store clean, dry, and separate from powder and cleaning agents.
Practical tip: Don’t just check “any weight,” but a value close to the actually used powder lot. A second control point below or above it additionally shows whether the display is only plausible at one point or remains stable across the working range.
Important limit: A passed check only confirms the display at the tested points under current conditions. It does not turn a reloading scale into a calibrated laboratory device and does not replace maintenance or calibration according to the scale manufacturer’s instructions.

Frequently asked questions
What is the total weight of the set? All eight test weights together total 60.5 grain.
Which individual weights are included? Included are two 20 grain, one 10 grain, one 5 grain, two 2 grain, one 1 grain, and one 0.5 grain.
Can I use it to check digital and mechanical scales? Yes, provided the scale works in grain, the chosen test value is within its capacity, and the respective operating instructions are followed.
Does the set automatically calibrate my scale? No. The weights show whether known test values are plausibly displayed. Necessary calibration or adjustment is done exclusively according to the scale manufacturer’s instructions.
Is the set sufficient for large...
e rifle loads? Only up to a total of 60.5 grain. For higher checkpoints, the separately available RCBS Deluxe Check Weight Set is intended.
Why should I use multiple test values? A single correct value says little about the rest of the working range. Multiple points close to the actually used measured values provide a more meaningful plausibility check.
What do I do in case of a deviation? Stop work, check zero point, cleanliness, setup location and power supply, calibrate the scale according to the manufacturer's instructions and then check again. Unexplained measured values must not be used for powder loads.
