Vortex Crossfire HD 12–36×50 – compact spotter with direct line of sight The straight 50 mm version combines 12–36x magnification with just under 885 g weight, Arca-Swiss foot, and a direct sight line. It’s suitable for range spotting, table and window use, as well as mobile nature observation.
The compromise: more compact than 80 mm, but at 36× more dependent on light, heat shimmer, and tripod stability.
Honest assessment
The biggest advantage of the straight design is quick target acquisition: free view and spotting scope axis naturally align. For longer standing observations, the angled version can be more ergonomic because the tripod can stay lower. The 50 mm class is the more mobile choice, not the maximum twilight or 60× solution.
