The .30-30 was introduced in early 1895 for the Winchester Model 1894 lever-action rifle and was the first small-caliber sporting rifle cartridge developed in the USA for smokeless powder. Jacketed bullets for the .30-30 have a nominal diameter of .308 inches. Cast lead bullets for the .30-30 are also popular and typically have a diameter of .309 inches.

The .30-30 is considered an entry-level cartridge for modern big game hunting. Although it is very effective for game the size of deer and black bears, most commercial loads for this purpose are limited to an effective range of about 200 meters, except when using bullets with a ballistic tip. The cartridge is typically loaded with bullets between 150 and 170 grains, but lighter loads are also possible. Bullets up to 180 grains can be used, but the overall length restrictions of most lever-action rifles designed for this caliber limit their usefulness. (Show description in original language)
