Dabei handelt es sich um eine gestrickte Frotteeware, wobei die eine Seite glatt gestrickt ist und die andere Seite aus Frotteeschlingen besteht. Die luftigen Frotteeschlingen in Kombination mit der Kräuselstruktur der Wolle bilden einen Trikotstrick, der sehr viel Luft bindet, wodurch das sehr gute Isolationsvermögen entsteht. Je dicker die Luftschicht am Körper, desto weniger Körperwärme kann entweichen. Ullfrotté wird auf eigens dafür hergestellten Rundstrickmaschinen als Schlauch mit unterschiedlichen Durchmessern gestrickt, völlig ohne Nähte, die scheuern oder aufgehen könnten.Diese dünne Funktionsunterwäsche ist so konzipiert, dass sie direkt auf der Haut getragen werden kann – als feuchtigkeitstransportierende unterste Schicht.
