The Gewehr 88 was adopted as the standard weapon of the German army in 1888, the name derives from the year. Since the Prussian rifle testing commission (G.P.K.) in Spandau aimed to create the best rifle by combining individual components of various origins, it is also known as the "commission rifle."

Das Gewehr 88 wurde im Jahre 1888 als Ordonnanzwaffe des Deutschen Heeres angenommen, der Name leitet sich von der Jahreszahl ab. Da die preußische Gewehrprüfungskommission (G.P.K.) in Spandau bestrebt war, durch Kombinieren von Einzelkomponenten verschiedener Herkunft das beste Gewehr zu schaffen, trägt es auch den Namen „Kommissionsgewehr“.
