Remington 1858 New Model Sheriff .44, a six-shot cap-and-ball black powder revolver made by Remington in .44 caliber, front-loaded, with a black-blued steel frame. The (LC) version has checkered grip panels.

Remington was the first revolver to feature a so-called solid frame (a one-piece frame surrounding the cylinder), making it more reliable than the Colt revolvers of its time, which had open frames. The solid frame also provided greater structural rigidity. Another advantage was that the cylinder could be quickly removed and replaced with a new, already loaded one. The cylindrical cylinder has rectangular notches for the cylinder latch. The barrel, with a half-moon front sight, is screwed into the frame. Produced from 1863 to 1875 in two calibers: .36 cal Navy model and .44 cal Army model. An estimated 122,000 examples of this model left the factory. It was used in the Wild West in two versions: the original cap-and-ball version and a conversion for metallic cartridges.

Construction – steel frame, black-blued. Checkered walnut grip panels. Short octagonal barrel, 5.5" long, with a 1-30" twist rate. The trigger guard is made of brass.

Trigger – the cocking mechanism has two positions: half-cocked, for fitting caps onto the nipples, and fully cocked, ready to fire.

Loading lever – a lever-type rammer, like the one on a classic Colt-style revolver. Hinged beneath the revolver’s barrel, it is used to press lead balls into the cylinder chambers. The loading lever widens toward the rear, giving the gun a more streamlined shape and preventing it from catching on the edge of a holster.

The Remington Model 1858 was William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody’s favorite firearm. One of his revolvers can be seen at Remington Arms Company headquarters, along with a handwritten note from him that reads: “I carried and used this old Remington revolver for many years, in the Indian wars and to kill buffalo. And it never failed me.” It’s worth noting that Buffalo Bill was so attached to his firearm that he continued using it even after more modern revolvers chambered for metallic cartridges appeared. His attachment may have been due to the revolver’s high accuracy and stopping power. Depending on the amount and quality of the powder used, bullets fired from the Remington 1858 could reach high muzzle velocities, from 168 to 393 meters per second or more. For comparison, a bullet fired from a P-64 pistol has a muzzle velocity of 305 meters per second.

Remington 1858 New Model Sheriff .44, sześciostrzałowy kapiszonowy rewolwer czarnoprochowy firmy Remington w kalibrze .44, ładowany odprzodowo z ramą stalową zamkniętą oksydowaną na czarno.

Moletowane okładki chwytu wykonane z drewna orzechowego.
