Modele Bodyguard
Smith & Wesson Model 38/49 „Bodyguard” to Model 36, który posiada osłonę kurka typu „Camel Hump”, stosowaną w celu zapobiegania zaczepianiu się o odzież, ponieważ kurek ukryty jest w osłonie. Smith & Wesson Bodyguard jest o tyle nietypowy, że wersja „Airweight” ze stopu została wypuszczona jako pierwsza, jako Smith & Wesson Airweight Bodyguard, w 1955 roku. W 1957 roku Smith & Wesson wprowadził nowy system numeracji modeli, a Airweight Bodyguard stał się Modelem 38. Bodyguard o stalowej ramie, Model 49, został wprowadzony dopiero w 1959 roku. Było to o tyle nietypowe, że większość Airweightów poprzedzały ich stalowe odpowiedniki. W Sajgonie, w lutym 1968 roku, rewolwer Bodyguard został użyty przez generała Nguyễn Ngọc Loan’a do wykonania egzekucji na zamachowcu z Vietcongu Nguyễn Văn Lém. Zaowocowało to jednym z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych zdjęć z okresu wojny w Wietnamie.
