Pierwsze egzemplarze „Dragoona” były produkowane dla Colta przez Eli Whitney w Connecticut.
Zmiany były głównie reakcją na potrzeby wojska, które z wielkim entuzjazmem przyjęło „Walkera” lecz od początku kluczową wadą modelu była jego ogromna waga. Odpowiedzią Colta był właśnie Dragoon z jego czterema następującymi po sobie wersjami. Projekt nowego rewolweru odniósł taki sukces, że niepodzielnie był najpopularniejszą bronią w armii, aż do lat 60 i powstania Colta Army.
Dragoon występuje w 4 różnych wersjach:
Whitneyville – model na bazie szkieletu Walkera ze zmienionym cylindrem, lufą i pobojczykiem (z zatrzaskiem)
„pierwszy” - posiada owalne gniazda kapiszonów
„drugi” - posiada kwadratowe gniazda kapiszonów
„trzeci” - zmieniony kabłąk spustu ( okrągły )
