Negli anni ’50 del secolo scorso la pistola semiautomatica Beretta modello 1951 in calibro 9mm/Parabellum (la prima prodotta dalla Casa gardonese in questo calibro) ebbe un grande successo non solo in Italia, dove inizialmente fu adottata dal Com.Sub.In, dalla Marina Militare e dalla Polizia di Stato, ma anche in Egitto e nel medio oriente.
La pistola venne infatti adottata anche dall’esercito egiziano vincendo la gara nei confronti della Tokagypt, prodotta in Ungheria (clone della Tokarev T33), nonostante che quest’ultima fosse costruita in un paese del blocco sovietico che al tempo aveva grande influenza sul governo egiziano di Muhammad Neguib e Gamal Abdel Nasser, che nel 1952 rovesciarono il regno di Faruq.
Negli anni ‘70 del secolo scorso anche Saddam Hussein, dittatore dell’Iraq, fu affascinato dalla pistola italiana e richiese alla Beretta la licenza di produzione presso i loro stabilimenti militari.
L’ Iraq produsse la Beretta 1951 sotto licenza nel 1976/77 con il nome Tariq; ciò fu confermato nel 1991 durante la guerra del Golfo, quando gli americani ne catturarono diversi esemplari come preda bellica.
Secondo altre fonti la produzione sarebbe avvenuta a partire dal 1981, ma questa teoria non ha riscontri, così come molti altri dettagli sulla Tariq. Il fatto che negli ultimi decenni l’Iraq sia stato coinvolto in due devastanti guerre e versi tuttora in uno stato di instabilità politica, non aiuta certo la raccolta di informazioni da parte del collezionista.
