Le aziende spagnole Beistegui Hermanos e Astra iniziarono a produrre versioni della C96 alimentate da caricatore amovibile e a fuoco selettivo rispettivamente nel 1927 e nel 1928, destinate all’esportazione in Estremo Oriente. La Mauser per non perdere quote di mercato iniziò la produzione dello Schnellfeuer (fuoco rapido), la loro versione a fuoco selettivo e caricatore staccabile dell’M30 progettata dall’ingegnere Karl Westinger. La produzione iniziò nel 1932 e terminò nel 1938. Un progetto di grande successo, con circa 98.000 pezzi prodotti con una propria serie di range matricolare. Gran parte della produzione fu destinata all’esportazione in Sud America, Cina e per la guerra civile spagnola. Dal 1932 al 1935, l’esercito jugoslavo testò lotti di Schnellfeuer sia in 7,63 mm sia in 9×19. Anche il governo brasiliano acquistò cinquecento pistole mitragliatrici Schnellfeuer per la Policia Militar do Distrito Federal. Nel 1939, le forze armate tedesche iniziarono ad acquisire la Schnellfeuer con la denominazione militare “Reihenfeuer (“Serie di fuoco”) Pistole Modell 712″. Queste furono distribuite alle unità di polizia militare della Wehrmacht, delle Waffen-SS, alla Kriegsmarine per l’uso della fanteria di marina e alla Luftwaffe per portaordini motociclisti e reparti dell’antiaerea. Si tratta di 7.800 pezzi compresi nel range matricolare da 83.000 e 93.000 (questa è la numero 90.751). L’arma ha una canna da 5,5 pollici, un gruppo di mira posteriore graduato da 50 a 1.000 metri e l’attacco per un un calciolo/fondina in legno. Si differenzia dalla C96 standard per il caricatore amovibile e un selettore di fuoco sul lato sinistro del telaio con marcature “N” per “Normalfeuer” (fuoco a colpo singolo) e Reihenfeuer (“fuoco in serie”). Di fianco è presente il MAUSER banner. In modalità completamente automatica, la pistola produce una cadenza ciclica di circa 900 colpi al minuto, il che la rende quasi incontrollabile se non si monta il calciolo.
