Die 8 mm Mauser wurde 1888 von der deutschen Armee und in den folgenden Jahren von einer Reihe von Ländern wie der Tschechoslowakei übernommen. Polen und China. Die Bezeichnung "Mauser" ist eigentlich eine Fehlbezeichnung, denn die Patrone wurde von einer deutschen Militärkommission im Arsenal Spandau für einen Vorläufer des berühmten Mauser-Gewehrs entwickelt, das 1898 eingeführt wurde. Das "J" im Namen steht für "Infanterie". Die Bezeichnung "J" beruht auf einem Irrtum, der auf die frühere Verwendung von gotischen Buchstaben in Deutschland zurückzuführen ist und hat keine Bedeutung für die Geschossgröße. Aber 1905 stellte die deutsche Armee von runden 226-grain-Geschossen auf ein spitzes 154-grain-Bootschwanz-Geschoss um, und gleichzeitig wurde der Durchmesser des Geschosses von .318" auf den heutigen Standard von .323" geändert. Das "S" - kurz für "Spitzer" - bedeutet...
