La pistola semiautomatica Colt modello M1903 Pocket Hammer fu progettata da John Browning: era una versione compatta della Colt M1902.
La Pocket Hammer del 1903 presenta differenze significative rispetto al 1902 Military anche se sparano la stessa cartuccia: il suo design non è in alcun modo collegato al modello Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless o alla pistola FN modello 1903. A colpo d’occhio, questa pistola è visivamente più simile alla successiva Colt 1911 che al modello sportivo Colt 1902 da cui si è evoluta. Tuttavia se messe effettivamente a confronto, sono evidenti le molte differenze rispetto al Modello 1911. Lo smontaggio è simile alla M1902 con un traversino verso la volata da inserire/disinserire per il montaggio e lo smontaggio. L’arma è camerata per il calibro .38 ACP.
Ebbe un buon successo commerciale che andò diminuendo con l’introduzione del M1905 in calibro .45, che cessò praticamente del tutto con la produzione delle M1911. Colt tenne a catalogo questo modello fino ai primi anni ’20. La produzione del modello Pocket Hammer Model 1903, in pratica una versione a canna corta del M1902, iniziò nel 1904 (100 furono prodotte nel 1903) con una produzione che variava da 1.200 a 2.300 ogni anno fino al 1917 quando la produzione si ridusse drasticamente. A differenza del modello sportivo da cui è derivato, e del modello militare del 1902, il Pocket Hammer del 1903 presenta le prese al carrello nella parte posteriore. I primi pezzi le avevano anteriori ma già dal 1905 Colt cambiò la produzione nella configurazione definitiva. I numeri di serie iniziarono a 19.999 nel 1903 e andarono indietro al 16.000 nel 1906. Successivamente, le matricole ripresero da 20.000 fino a 47.227, terminando nel 1927 quando la produzione cessò definitivamente; venne prodotto un totale approssimativo di 29.237 pezzi.
Alcuni pezzi furono acquistati dai militari come arma secondaria ma senza alcun contratto ufficiale.
Tuttavia, il modello ebbe vendite significative in Messico prima e durante la rivoluzione messicana (1910-1920); anche la polizia filippina acquistò alcuni pezzi negli anni ’20.
Quella che abbiamo in armeria è stata prodotta nel 1905 (matricola 27674) la meccanica è ottima e la brunitura originale.
