The Mosin–Nagant (in Russian винтовка Мосина, vintovka Mosina, meaning “Mosin rifle”) is a manually operated bolt-action rifle produced between 1891 and 1959 and widely used by the Russian Empire, Soviet Union, and various other states.
It is one of the most produced rifles in history with over 37 million units, used for about 100 years.
M1891/30 (in Russian винтовка образца 1891/30 года винтовка Мосина, vintovka obrazca 1891/30 goda vintovka Mosina): the most prolific variant of the Mosin Nagant. It was produced from 1930 to 1945 and many Dragoon rifles were adapted to the new standard. It was often used as a sniper rifle during World War II. Initially, the rifles were fitted with PE or PEM scopes (4x magnification) copied directly from Zeiss designs, but over time both were replaced by the more compact, simple, and easy-to-produce PU 3.5×. Since the sight was mounted directly above the receiver, making it impossible to feed the rifle via clips, the bolt handle had to be reshaped by bending it downward to allow bolt unlocking with rotation without the sight interfering with the operation. The rifle differs from the Dragoon model by having lower sights calibrated in meters (instead of Arshin), a cylindrical receiver instead of octagonal, and a covered front sight instead of a simple blade.
Rifle used in the famous film/epic THE ENEMY AT THE GATES.
