La Wildey Survivor fu la prima pistola semi-automatica a recupero di gas pensata per utilizzare munizioni di grosso calibro per la caccia e il tiro alla silhouette; il design aggressivo e le prestazioni eccezionali ne hanno fatto una star del cinema d’azione americano, e l’hanno elevata a oggetto di culto e collezione.
Prima della Desert Eagle, ci fu la Wildey Survivor: progettata nel 1973 dall’americano Wildey J. Moore, la Wildey Survivor ha ancora oggi un posto nei cuori degli appassionati di armi, conquistatosi grazie alle peculiarissime caratteristiche costruttive, e nell’immaginario collettivo per la sua apparizione in numerosi film d’azione; primo fra tutti Il giustiziere della notte 3, sul cui set Charles Bronson portò e usò una Wildey Survivor di sua proprietà.
Di sicuro l’aspetto e il Design hanno contribuito a rendere la Wildey Survivor “fotogenica” abbastanza da farla divenire un’icona: realizzata interamente in acciaio. La Wildey Survivor presenta uno scatto in azione mista con leva manuale di disarmo del cane e un “corpo” lungo 127 millimetri, a cui va aggiunta la canna, di tipo fisso per aumentare la precisione ma intercambiabile in fase di smontaggio da campagna, disponibile in otto varianti intercambiabili di lunghezza variabile dai cinque pollici (127 mm) ai diciotto pollici (457 mm) – in tutti i casi con mirino montato su bindella rialzata e tacca di mira regolabile, oltre alla predisposizione per interfacce per ottiche di puntamento.
Con un peso totale di 1,8 chilogrammi è costruita per sostenere oltre 48.000 PSI alla culatta.
La Wildey Survivor divenne celebre quando Charles Bronson la utilizzò nel terzo episodio de Il Giustiziere della Notte 3 (Death Wish, 1985).
Oggi, come molte altre armi di questo tipo e della sua epoca, le Wildey Survivor originali come questa sono oggetto di grande interesse per i collezionisti.
