Pistola nata nel 1961 per il tiro a segno come concorrente della Colt Gold Cup .38 Mid Range, è l’unica semiauto S&W in questo calibro; la versione 52-1 fu prodotta per soli 7 anni dal 1963 come evoluzione del model 52 da cui differisce per lo scatto in sola singola azione e la tacca di mira migliorata; nel 1970 fu sostituito dal 52-2 in produzione fino al 1993
