Spuhr · Buying Guide
Choose an optic mount based on ring size, height, and cant
The Spuhr ST-3701 direct mount, 30 mm / 35 mm / 7 MIL (24 MOA), for SAKO TRG-22/42 and Tikka T3x is assessed based on fit, variant, and practical effect—without claiming hands-on testing.
Check fit first
Does this product fit your setup?
Good fit If the tube diameter, Picatinny interface, mounting height, cant, and any forward offset match your optic and firearm exactly.
Probably not a fit If you’ve only checked the ring diameter, or the objective, turret, ejection port, or eye relief could cause interference.
Pre-order checklist Ring diameter, rail standard, mounting height, MOA/MIL cant, offset, and QD configuration. Compare the selected variant with the markings on your existing system and the manufacturer’s documentation.
With a direct mount, the shorter parts chain is only an advantage if every interface matches. The base must fit the receiver mounting point, the rings must match the correct main tube diameter, and the fixed position of both rings must still leave the scope enough room for proper eye relief.
That’s exactly what this kl
The ST-3701 is designed for a defined setup. It sits directly on the dovetail mount of the SAKO and Tikka systems specified by Spuhr. There’s no need for a separate rail with a second clamping point. This makes the mount compact and uncluttered, but not universal: if your firearm already has a Picatinny base, you’ll need a different Spuhr family.
Before choosing, confirm the following:
Firearm side: SAKO TRG-22, TRG-42 or Tikka T3x with the matching dovetail mount.
Optic side: 30 mm main tube with sufficiently long, straight clamping zones.
Geometry: 35 mm centerline height and fixed ring positions.
Ballistics: built-in cant of 7 MIL or 24 MOA.
Not compatible: TRG-S, Picatinny/STANAG, quick-detach use and 34 mm main tubes.
What direct mounting changes in the setup
On a TRG-22/42 or Tikka T3x with the matching mount, the ST-3701 replaces the combination of an aftermarket rail and a separate scope mount. The mount body attaches directly to the action and carries both rings, the level and accessory interfaces as a single unit. This doesn’t automatically reduce group size, but it removes an additional connection from the setup.
This design makes the most sense when the firearm will always be used with the same optic. It isn’t designed for frequent removal or switching between multiple firearms. It’s a fixed, screw-on direct mount, not a QD system.
TRG-22/42 isn’t the same as TRG-S
The firearm’s model designation is a real compatibility limit here. Spuhr explicitly lists the SAKO TRG-22, SAKO TRG-42 and Tikka T3x for the ST-3701. The datasheet excludes the TRG-S. So a general statement like “fits SAKO TRG” would be technically incorrect.
The same caution applies to Tikka. The current model datasheet lists the T3x. That doesn’t mean it’s approved for every older T3, every caliber or every aftermarket base. If your firearm already has a Picatinny or STANAG rail, choose the mount for that rail, not for the action underneath.
30 mm main tube and fixed clamping zones
The 30 mm specification refers only to the diameter of the cylindrical main tube. It says nothing about the objective’s outside diameter, the eyepiece size or the length of the turret block. An optic with a 34 mm tube won’t fit, even if its objective class or magnification range seems similar.
With a one-piece mount, the rings can’t be moved independently along a rail. Both straight clamping zones on the scope must therefore sit over the ring surfaces at the same time, while maintaining the correct eye relief in the shooting position. Spuhr explicitly excludes optics with an extended mechanical housing, such as US Optics TPAL/EREK, from the general 30 mm fit. For other models, check the optic’s dimension drawing, not the product photo.
35 mm centerline height and actual objective clearance
Spuhr specifies the height of the direct mount as the distance from the action’s upper reference plane to the optical centerline. On the canted ST-3701, the measurement point is at the rear plane of the rear ring. The 35 mm is therefore a reproducible design dimension, but not a ready-made clearance value beneath the objective.
For an initial geometric estimate, subtract half the actual outside diameter of the objective from the centerline height. Use the housing’s outside measurement, including the protective cap, not the nominal objective lens class. You also need to check the result against the actual contours of the barrel, action and any accessories fitted. The built-in cant slightly changes the clearance along the optic, so a calculation based only on the rear centerline height can’t replace checking the specific firearm.
Your head position is also part of this decision. A low mount isn’t automatically better if the S
chute pressure on the cheekpiece or tilt their head. The correct height allows for a natural cheek weld, an immediately centered field of view, and enough clearance for the actual scope housing.
Use the 7 MIL incline effectively
The ST-3701 has a 7 MIL, or 24 MOA, incline. This incline does not provide additional mechanical precision or increase the scope’s total adjustment range. It shifts the zero point within the existing elevation adjustment range, so after successful zeroing, more adjustment may typically remain in the required direction for long-range shooting.
Whether this works depends on the scope. Before buying, consider the total adjustment range, mechanical center, desired zeroing distance, and the long-range adjustment needed from the reticle or turrets. If the optic cannot compensate sufficiently for the built-in incline at the desired zeroing distance, a mount with a shallower incline or no incline is the better choice.
Instructor tip: Plan the incline backward from your zero
Don’t start with the maximum advertised shooting distance. First set your actual zeroing distance, determine the available counter-adjustment of the specific optic, and allow a reasonable reserve for manufacturing tolerances and zeroing. Only the remaining adjustment range shows whether 7 MIL offers a useful advantage or makes a close-range zero unnecessarily difficult.
Set eye relief before tightening
The mount body is 126 mm long, and the position of both rings is fixed by design. The remaining eye-relief adjustment therefore comes entirely from the straight clamping sections of the scope. This adjustment can be limited, especially with a short main tube, a large turret block, or a long eyepiece.
Set up the optic at the highest magnification you expect to use and in your actual shooting position. The exit pupil is least forgiving there. If the full field of view is only visible when a ring sits on a transition in the housing, don’t adjust the clamping—choose a different mount or optic combination instead.
User tip: Adjust the cheekpiece only after setting eye relief
First, set the optic’s fore-and-aft position in a relaxed shooting position. Then adjust the cheekpiece so your eye naturally aligns behind the optical axis. Reversing this order often leads to an unnatural head position to compensate for incorrect eye relief.
Recoil lug and clamping
The setup includes an adjustable recoil screw for the AI/TRG interface. Its purpose is to provide longitudinal support against the designated contact point. It does not replace full-surface contact with the mount and must not be used to force a crooked mount body onto the rail.
According to the model datasheet, the screws are coated and pre-waxed at the factory. This condition is part of Spuhr’s torque specification. Do not add lubricants or threadlocker, as these change the preload. Follow the current manufacturer’s instructions when mounting and, for ring clamping, any lower torque specification from the scope manufacturer.
User tip: Adjust the recoil screw only after the mount is seated flat
Place the base fully onto the designated interface, with no visible gap. Only once it is in full contact should you set the recoil support according to the instructions. This lets the screw do its intended job without pushing the mount out of alignment.
Bubble level and Spuhr interfaces
The integrated bubble level helps you detect cant before firing. Especially with large elevation corrections, a canted firearm can cause lateral deviation even when the reticle and target image initially look plausible. The bubble level is therefore not a decorative detail, but a tool for ensuring repeatable procedures.
Seven sets of Spuhr Interface are available for com
patible accessory carriers are available. These allow compatible add-on components to be positioned on the mount body without changing the firearm interface. These interfaces are not Picatinny rails; each accessory requires a compatible Spuhr carrier and is not included.
User tip: Make the bubble level part of your pre-shot routine
Check the bubble level after settling into your natural position and immediately before the shot breaks. If you first align everything artificially “level” and then change your shoulder position, you often introduce cant again. Checking the level needs to be part of your routine, not a one-time mounting check.
Alignment with the Spuhr Wedge
The included 10-degree wedge serves as a geometric alignment aid between the mount bridge and a suitable flat underside on the scope. It can quickly align the reticle with the mount, provided the scope body has a suitable contact surface.
If the underside is rounded, offset, or too short, do not force the wedge into place. Another proper alignment method is then required. What matters is that the scope sits stress-free in the rings and that the reticle is aligned with the firearm as it is actually set up.
User tip: Use the wedge only on a true reference surface
Check whether the underside of the turret housing is flat and parallel to the intended reticle reference. If this surface is missing, a wedge that appears to sit flush does not provide a reliable indication. In that case, an external reference method is more reliable than forcing contact.
Our assessment
The ST-3701 is not a universal premium mount for every TRG or Tikka rifle. Its strength lies precisely in its specialized design: direct attachment, a one-piece body, defined 30 mm ring geometry, and a long-range-oriented incline without an additional Picatinny layer.
For a permanently set up TRG-22/42 or T3x, it is technically convincing if the scope dimensions, zero, and stock geometry are established in advance. If you frequently remove your scope, already have a rail installed, or have only just enough elevation adjustment to compensate for 24 MOA, this version offers no benefit. In that case, a different mount is not the inferior choice, but the technically correct one.
Black-Raptor summary:
Buy if: the confirmed TRG-22/42 or T3x interface, a geometrically compatible 30 mm scope, and the planned use of 7 MIL of incline all match.
Don't buy if: you have a TRG-S or Picatinny interface, use a 34 mm tube, need a QD function, or the scope does not have enough adjustment range to compensate at your desired zero distance.

FAQ
Does the ST-3701 fit a SAKO TRG-S? No. The model datasheet explicitly excludes the TRG-S.
lich out. The TRG-22 and TRG-42 are listed, as well as the Tikka T3x with the matching interface.
Can it be mounted on a Picatinny rail? No. It’s a direct mount for the specified dovetail interface. A compatible SP or QDP version is required for MIL-STD-1913 or STANAG 4694.
Is every Tikka T3 automatically compatible? No. The specific model datasheet lists the Tikka T3x. This does not imply blanket approval for an older T3; the exact action generation and interface must be confirmed separately.
Does it fit every scope with a 30 mm main tube? Not necessarily. Both straight clamping zones, the turret housing and eye relief must match the fixed ring geometry. Spuhr explicitly excludes extended US Optics TPAL/EREK housings.
What do 7 MIL or 24 MOA do? The cant shifts the zero point within the available elevation adjustment range, potentially leaving more usable adjustment for long distances. It does not increase the total adjustment range or the optic’s inherent precision.
What additional parts are needed? You’ll need a compatible firearm, a 30 mm scope with matching geometry and suitable mounting tools. Spuhr interface accessories are available separately and aren’t required for basic function. Technical specifications in practice
Purchase-critical specifications Ring diameter, rail standard, height, MOA/MIL cant, offset and QD version.
Practical effect The right geometry provides clearance, proper eye relief and usable elevation adjustment; the wrong height or too much cant can significantly limit use.
Limitations and avoiding the wrong purchase
Important before mounting and use Mount only on a completely unloaded firearm. Tighten the screws in a cross pattern using a suitable torque wrench and following the manufacturer’s instructions; check the QD tension and point of impact after initial installation.
Included Only the version explicitly specified in the existing product text and selected variant is included. Firearms, optics or other accessories shown are included only if explicitly listed.
Black-Raptor assessment: This version makes sense if the purchase-critical dimensions and interfaces have been clearly confirmed in advance. If compatibility is unclear, first check the model designation and existing interface.

Ballistik: 7 MIL beziehungsweise 24 MOA eingebaute Neigung.
7 MIL Vorneigung sinnvoll nutzen

Was bewirken 7 MIL beziehungsweise 24 MOA?
