1–6×24 · SFP · AR-BDC3
Vortex Venom 1–6×24: a fast LPVO with a clear role
The VEN-1601 combines a true 1–6× zoom range, an illuminated second focal plane AR-BDC3 reticle, and a 30 mm tube. It’s designed for dynamic shooting at short to medium distances—not for maximum low-light performance or long-range detail.
Important before you buy: the SFP reticle, MOA adjustment system, and BDC markings are three separate considerations. The reticle stays the same apparent size, adjustments are in 1/4 MOA, and the holdover marks need to be verified in practice with your combination of zero, ammunition, and magnification.
Open the buying checklist
Our honest take
The Venom 1–6×24 makes sense if a wide field of view at 1× and enough magnification up to 6× matter more than extreme magnification. The 24 mm objective keeps the system compact, but has physical limits in very low light.
The AR-BDC3 is not a universal range calculator. Its markings are only reliable once you’ve verified them with your firearm, load, and chosen zero.
A good fit if … you switch between close and medium distances on an AR/PCC or another compatible platform, can mount a 30 mm tube, and want an active magnification
you incorporate into your training.
Not the best fit if … you’re looking for maximum low-light performance, more than 6× magnification, an FFP reticle, or a solution where holdover marks remain scaled consistently throughout the zoom range.
Features that matter in practice
1–6× magnification 1× provides a wide view and speed; 4–6× reveals more detail for more controlled shots at medium range. The throw lever makes it quicker to change magnification.
AR-BDC3 in SFP The reticle stays the same apparent size. The BDC references therefore need to be verified at the intended magnification and with your own setup.
1/4-MOA click adjustment The turrets adjust in 1/4 MOA per click. This click value describes the adjustment mechanism and should not be confused with the focal plane or reticle scaling.
30-mm tube and capped turrets The 30-mm design requires compatible rings or a compatible cantilever mount. Capped turrets are less prone to accidental adjustment during dynamic use.
Limitations, drawbacks, and common buying mistakes
1× is not a red dot: An LPVO is still a scope when it comes to eye position and eye relief.
Don’t rely on the BDC blindly: Bullet, velocity, sight height, zero, and actual distance all affect point of impact.
24 mm keeps it compact: This is an advantage in size and mounting height, but it’s no substitute for larger objective lenses in very low light.
Don’t forget the mount: The VEN-1601 does not include a 30-mm mounting system. Tube diameter, mounting height, eye relief, and Picatinny/base system must all be compatible.
Technical specs and what they mean in practice
Magnification / objective lens 1–6× / 24 mm – focused on speed and a compact design rather than maximum light-gathering capability.
Reticle / focal plane AR-BDC3, illuminated, second focal plane (SFP). The reticle stays the same apparent size when zooming.
Click adjustment 1/4 MOA per click, 25 MOA per revolution. Maximum adjustment range according to the manufacturer: 140 MOA elevation and 140 MOA windage.
Parallax Factory-set for 100 yd. This suits the LPVO concept, but doesn’t replace proper head positioning.
Eye relief / field of view 3.7″ eye relief; field of view 126.0–20.2 ft at 100 yd. The wide field of view at 1× helps you stay aware of your surroundings; at 6×, the field of view is correspondingly narrower.
Tube / length / weight 30-mm tube, 10.3″ length, and 19.5 oz weight. Assess mounting height and balance as part of the complete setup.
Mounting and safe use
Completely unload the firearm and attach the mount according to the mount manufacturer’s instructions. Align the scope without applying stress, and check your natural shooting position and eye relief before fully tightening. Check zero after mounting or removing the scope.
Use BDC holdover marks only after confirming them in practice. For training and hunting, record the ammunition actually used, sight height, and zeroing distance.
Included
According to Vortex, the VEN-1601 includes a sunshade, throw lever, objective lens and eyepiece covers, lens cloth, 1 × CR2032 battery, and 2-mm hex key.
Not included: 30-mm rings or cantilever mount, and firearm.
FAQ about the Vortex Venom 1–6×24
Is the Venom 1–6×24 an FFP scope? No. The AR-BDC3 is in the second focal plane (SFP). The reticle stays the same apparent size when zooming.
How does the click adjustment work? It adjusts in 1/4 MOA per click. This is the turret adjustment and shouldn’t be confused with the focal plane or BDC function.
Is 1× like a red dot? No. The field of view is very wide at 1×, but an LPVO still depends on proper eye positioning.
Is a mount included? No. You’ll need a compatible 30-mm mount or rings.
What battery does it need? One CR2032 for the illuminated reticle; according to the manufacturer, a battery is included.
Black Raptor · Buying decision
For use
Use the 1× and 6× deliberately—not just buy “more zoom.”
The VEN-1601 is a good fit if the 30 mm mount, eye relief, SFP design, and AR-BDC3 suit your setup. If you prioritize low-light performance or true long-range capability, choose a different optic design.

AR-BDC3 in SFP Das Absehen bleibt optisch gleich groß.
1/4-MOA-Klickverstellung Die Türme arbeiten in 1/4 MOA pro Klick.
Absehen / Bildebene AR-BDC3, beleuchtet, zweite Bildebene (SFP).
