Black Raptor Product Review · Thermal Imaging
Zentron ZEN Q50: 640 sensor and 50 mm optics without an integrated LRF
The Q50 is the long-range observation model in the ZEN Q series: 640×512 VOx, 50 mm f/1.0, 2.3× optical base magnification, 64 GB storage, and interchangeable batteries. The key buying consideration isn’t the maximum detection range, but whether the narrower 8.7° × 7° field of view suits your hunting grounds.

Strength 50 mm lens + 640×512 sensor for extra detail on open terrain.

Limitation No integrated laser rangefinder; lighter than the Q50R, though.

Practical value 2.3× base magnification helps at a distance, but reduces your view of the immediate area.

Risk of a bad purchase 2,600 m detection is a manufacturer’s detection figure—not a reliable identification or practical viewing distance.

What’s behind the specs?
The uncooled VOx detector has 640×512 pixels, a 12 µm pixel pitch, and, according to Zentron’s current specifications, NETD ≤20 mK. NETD describes how small a temperature difference the sensor can distinguish from its own noise. A low value is especially helpful when thermal contrast is weak—but it doesn’t automatically guarantee a good image, since the lens, image processing, focus, display, and weather all play a part.
The 50 mm f/1.0 optics are what define the Q50. They provide 2.3× optical base magnification and an 8.7° × 7° field of view. This makes sense if you often observe across fields, clearings, or open terrain. For very short distances and quickly scanning wide areas, a 35 mm device may be more comfortable.

Techni
sche data with practical interpretation

Sensor
Uncooled VOx, 640×512, 12 µm, 50 Hz – plenty of detail, but no substitute for proper focus.

NETD
≤20 mK according to the manufacturer – relevant when temperature differences are small.

Lens
50 mm f/1.0 – designed for longer distances, but with a narrower field of view than 35 mm.

Field of view
8.7° × 7° – about 15.2 × 12.2 m at 100 m.

Magnification
2.3× optical; digital zoom up to 18.4×. Digital zoom also enlarges pixels and image noise.

Display
OLED 1920×1080, eye relief 52 mm, diopter adjustment −5 to +5.

Storage / wireless
64 GB, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and microphone; ZEN LINK supports media and firmware updates.

Housing
Magnesium, IP67, 158 × 65 × 74 mm, approx. 423 g.

Manufacturer's detection range
Up to 2,600 m; this should be understood as detection of a heat signature only, not as a reliable identification distance.

Buy if …
You mainly observe open hunting areas.
You want 640 resolution and the range-oriented performance of a 50 mm lens.
You can do without an integrated LRF.
Replaceable batteries and app/OTA support are important to you.

Don't buy if …
You need the widest possible field of view at short range.
Range measurement must be integrated into the device.
You're looking for an attachment rather than a standalone observation device.
You equate high digital zoom figures with additional optical detail resolution.

Q50 or Q50R?
Both models combine 640×512, 50 mm f/1.0 and 2.3× base magnification. The key difference is the Q50R's integrated laser rangefinder. Zentron lists the Q50 at around 423 g and the Q50R at around 474 g. If you measure distances separately or don't need to measure them constantly in familiar hunting areas, the Q50 saves weight and complexity. If you need range measurement directly on the device, consider the Q50R.

Practical observation tips

1. Don't start with digital zoom: First search and orient yourself using the base image, then zoom in moderately for details. This keeps the field of view usable.
2. Adjust focus deliberately: With thermal imaging, proper lens focus often has a greater impact on visible detail than an extra zoom level.
3. Account for temperature changes: Fog, rain, heated vegetation and very similar ambient temperatures can reduce thermal contrast. NETD can't protect you from the laws of physics.
4. Plan for cold batteries: For long winter outings, carry a charged second set close to your body; manufacturer runtimes are maximum values under specified conditions.

What's included and connections
According to current Zentron documentation, the system includes a Picatinny rail, charger, four 18350 batteries, eyecup, tools/screws, USB-C cable, case and cleaning cloth. The exact configuration may vary by batch; the contents supplied with the device are what count.
Note: Firmware, reticle and usage features may be restricted or available differently depending on software version, region and applicable laws. A technical update option does not constitute blanket legal authorization.

FAQ
Does the Zentron ZEN Q50 have a rangefinder? No. The Q50 does not have an integrated laser rangefinder. This feature is available on the Q50R, the comparable 50 mm model. What is the Q50's field of view? Zentron specifies 8.7° horizontally and 7° vertically. That's roughly 15.2 × 12.2 m at 100 m and reflects the range-oriented nature of the 50 mm lens. How long does a set of batteries last? The current Zentron brochure specifies up to 6 hours for the Q50 with two 18350 batteries. Temperature, display brightness, wireless connectivity and recording features can affect actual runtime. What does the 2
.600 m rating? It refers to the maximum detection range of a heat source specified by the manufacturer. It should not be confused with reliable identification, identifying game for hunting, or a practical operating distance. Q50 or a 35 mm thermal imaging device? Q50 if range and base magnification matter more. 35 mm is often more comfortable if a wider field of view and a quick overview at short to medium range are the priority.

Was steckt technisch dahinter?

Was bedeutet die 2.600-m-Angabe?
