The ThermTec Hunt 650L is a thermal imaging device with a 2-in-1 approach: it can be used as a clip-on device on compatible day scopes and can also be used as a handheld monocular when needed. The combination of a 50 mm F1.0 lens, 640×512 sensor with NETD ≤ 15 mK (manufacturer’s specification), and integrated laser rangefinder up to 1,000 m (manufacturer’s specification) clearly targets users who don’t want to compromise on distance work and target identification.

Our assessment – from instructor & user perspective
The strength of the Hunt 650L is the clean combo of “see + measure”: thermal imaging provides information, the LRF provides facts. Especially at night, distance in thermal imaging often appears “falsely close” – a measurement value significantly reduces misjudgments. Added to that is the 50 mm lens: narrower field of view but more detail at distance. Anyone who spends a lot of time in the field or on forest trails will notice this immediately.
Practical benefit: The point of impact correction of 1.1 cm at 100 m is a very fine gradation. Converted, that’s 11 mm at 100 m, 5.5 mm at 50 m, and 22 mm at 200 m. This helps when you want to precisely adjust a setup (adapter, mounting position, optic change). Typical mistakes are too high digital zoom (the image becomes coarser) and too little focus work. Thermal imaging rewards careful operation: adjust focus, choose display brightness and palette accordingly – then the image appears noticeably “calmer.”
The device can be oversized if you only observe short distances and don’t really use the LRF or 50 mm lens. It makes sense if you want a compact clip-on that can also be used as a handheld device – without an extra monocular in your backpack.

FAQ
How far does the laser rangefinder measure?
According to the manufacturer, up to 1,000 m. In practice, measurability depends on target reflection, weather and surroundings, among other factors.
Can the device also be used as a monocular?
Yes. The 2-in-1 concept allows use as a handheld monocular if you want to observe independently of the mounting (manufacturer specification).
What is the benefit of the fine point-of-impact adjustment?
1.1 cm at 100 m corresponds to 11 mm. That is 5.5 mm at 50 m and 22 mm at 200 m. This allows very fine adjustments (manufacturer specification).
How large is the field of view?
Manufacturer specification: approx. 15.4 × 12.3 m at 100 m or approx. 8.8° × 7.0°. For fields/trails this is detail-oriented, in dense forest a wider field of view can be more comfortable.
How long does the battery last?
Manufacturer specification: up to approx. 5 hours at 25 °C. Temperature, display brightness, LRF and radio use significantly affect runtime.
