Im Mittelalter bestand der Morgenstern aus einem kurzen Griff und einer Kette mit einer Kugel. Die Kugel war mit Stacheln oder scharfen Kanten versehen, um bei einem Schlag besonders wirkungsvoll zu sein. Diese wurde vor allem im Kampf eingesetzt und war wegen ihrer Wirksamkeit gegen Rüstungen bekannt.
