The 8x57 JS is a top-class cartridge for distances of up to around 180 m. It is ideal for hunting in the forest and as a driven hunt cartridge. Furthermore, it is an excellent big game cartridge for Central European game. It is also very commonly used as a universal cartridge. With it, one generally experiences less hematoma formation than with fast, weaker calibers.
The 8x57 JS was developed from the old military cartridge 8x57 J by increasing the bullet diameter from .318" to .323" (8.08 / 8.20 mm) and received an S in the designation. It was introduced in 1905 and quickly gained favor among hunters.
RWS Short Rifle cartridges in caliber 8x57 JS:
Short, handy barrels are increasingly gaining popularity among hunters. This trend is supported by the more frequent use of suppressors. Standard ammunition is designed for common barrel lengths of 600 mm. When firing standard ammunition from short barrels (420 mm to 550 mm), the following disadvantages become apparent: energy and velocity loss, limited effectiveness, pronounced muzzle flash, loud muzzle report, and increased wear on suppressors.
Therefore, RWS has developed the Short Rifle cartridge, which is specifically optimized for use from short barrels. In practice, this means shooting from short barrels without loss of performance.

Außerdem ist sie eine erstklassige Hochwild-Patrone für mitteleuropäisches Wild. Sie wird dort auch sehr gerne als universelle Patrone eingesetzt. RWS hat deshalb mit der Short Rifle eine Patrone entwickelt, die speziell für die Verwendung aus kurzen Läufen optimiert ist. In der Praxis bedeutet das: Schießen aus kurzen Läufen ohne Leistungseinbußen.
