Dès 1792 l'Autriche se trouva impliqué dans les guerres de la Révolution et de l'Empire et à Vienne le Ministère de la Guerre dut faire face aux succès des armées de la Révolution et de développer des tactiques améliorées pour combattre la rapidité de mouvement des unités de l'infanterie. On pense également qu'une partie du mérite était due à l'utilisation du fusil 1777, donc à la fin de la première campagne d'Italie une commission fut chargée du développement d'un nouveau fusil pour l'armée autrichienne. Celle ci décide le 26 juillet 1798 de l'adoption d'un nouveau modèle inspiré par le modèle français mais qui conserve d'autres caractéristiques typiquement autrichiennes, tels que l'embouchoir volumineux, la baguette à deux têtes et la baïonnette à section cruciforme. Crosse en noyer, platine en acier, l'embouchoir, la grenadière, la capucine, le pontet et le bassinet sont en laiton.
