Cest une balle conçue pour une « mise à mort » instantanée de lanimal. La balle souvre très rapidement et se fragmente lorsquelle rencontre un os, créant alors un grand nombre de projectiles supplémentaires pour faire le maximum de dégâts. Elle pourrait être surnommée la balle « rapace », conçue pour le grand gibier, car elle constitue un choix idéal pour les chasseurs opérant dans des zones où il est crucial que lanimal se déplace peu après limpact. Bien entendu, du fait de son expansion rapide et de sa prédisposition à se fragmenter, la pénétration est limitée. Cela est important au moment de chasser dans des zones densément peuplées ou lors de chasses organisées où, au-delà du gibier, il y a des gens ou des biens. Il est donc fondamental de limiter les chances que la balle ne traverse lanimal. En cas de coup manqué, la balle éclatera au contact dune surface dure au lieu de ricocher. La rétention de la masse de cette balle est denviron 40% à 50. Elle ne convient pas au chasseur de trophées incurable qui pourrait alors se voir obligé dadopter des angles de tirs médiocres requérant un projectile à forte pénétration ou encore un chasseur de viande qui sattend à manger le gibier abattu, et ce même jusquau trou formé par la balle.
