The most popular hunting cars 2023

Gunfinder Magazine

Next to the rifle, the car is probably the most important piece of equipment for the hunter. Even if you live in the hunting area, you can hardly transport weapons or retrieve game independently if you do not have an off-road and reliable vehicle. Most active hunters do not live in the hunting ground, and often the journey takes one or more hours. In this case, comfort and performance increasingly come to the fore as relevant characteristics for the hunting car.

Small and inexpensive

Lada Niva

The Lada 4x4, formerly known as the Niva, has evolved over time into a reliable companion for hunting and outdoor enthusiasts. For more than 40 years, this Russian off-road vehicle has proven its worth in demanding situations, be it transporting bags of corn or killing game. Interestingly, its engineering is still based on the Fiat 124, as Fiat was Lada's engineering partner in Soviet times.

The Lada 4x4 surprises with its generous space. Even with four adults and a dog on board, passengers don't have to feel cramped. Off the road, this Russian off-roader feels in its element, as it has excellent suspension. However, the gear reduction could be a bit shorter to score even better in difficult terrain.

On asphalt, the Lada 4x4 shows its weaknesses. The vehicle produces a loud noise similar to a tractor and its thirst for fuel is considerable despite the modest output of 83 hp. In addition, there is always the risk of something breaking, regardless of the age of the vehicle. Those looking for an uncomplicated car should continue their search.

However, those looking for a rugged woodsman at an affordable price will be right at home with the Lada 4x4. This vehicle is not easily deterred and is ready to take on any adventure with you. Its proven off-road capabilities and ability to tackle difficult terrain make it an ideal companion for hunters and outdoor enthusiasts looking for a reliable companion.

Suzuki Jimny

Some cars seem to be made to last forever, and Suzuki's small off-roaders undoubtedly belong to this category. After the LJ, SJ and Samurai, the Jimny has been taking hunters' hearts by storm since 1998. This bonsai off-roader fits perfectly into the territory - it is small, light, maneuverable and agile. However, it offers sufficient space only if you fold down the rear seat to create additional storage space.

The Suzuki Jimny also presents itself as a special Ranger model in a hunting outfit and is only available for a thousand euros more than the standard Jimny. Under the hood is always the reliable 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine with its 85 hp, which consumes an average of 7.1 liters of gasoline.

The Jimny is a true all-rounder and impressively demonstrates its off-road capabilities. Whether steep slopes, muddy paths or rough terrain - this compact off-roader masters every challenge with ease. Its compact size allows it to meander through narrow paths and forest trails where larger vehicles would fail. With its rugged construction and efficient all-wheel drive, the Jimny is a reliable partner for hunters who want to enjoy their hunting trips to the fullest.

Despite its compact size and off-road capabilities, the Jimny also performs well in urban environments. It is easy to maneuver and finds room even in tight parking spaces. It also offers solid equipment and modern safety features that enhance driving comfort and safety.

The Suzuki Jimny embodies the idea of a timeless off-road vehicle that stands the test of time. With its compact size, proven off-road capability and affordable price, the Jimny is an excellent choice for hunters looking for a reliable and versatile vehicle that performs well in the field as well as in urban environments.

Dacia Duster

The Dacia Duster has long since become a best-seller and has gained a firm foothold in the automotive market. Although the name Dacia may be familiar to former GDR citizens who have been familiar with the robust sedans from the Balkans since the sixties, the Dacia brand, as a subsidiary of Renault, has long since earned a reputation as the "Aldi" among car manufacturers - if you spend more on a car, it's your own fault!

In particular, Dacia's first off-road vehicle, the Duster, has led to a veritable hype. With the proven all-wheel drive technology of the Nissan X-Trail, including a lockable multi-plate clutch for equal drive power front and rear, the Duster makes its way - with a choice of a 105 hp gasoline engine or a 110 hp diesel engine from Renault.

Meanwhile, the Dacia Duster is so popular that more and more fashionable special models are being offered alongside the economy versions. One highlight is the Dacia Duster Delsey, equipped with air conditioning, 16-inch aluminum wheels, CD radio with Bluetooth interface and a chic Delsey travel bag for good measure. The Duster offers space for the whole family and is already available at an affordable price. With an average consumption of just six liters of diesel per hundred kilometers, it is also economical to run.

The interior of the Dacia Duster has a rustic design, while the suspension ensures a comfortable ride. With a handsome ground clearance, the Duster is ready to venture off the beaten path and tackle difficult terrain.

The Dacia Duster combines practicality, roomy space and off-road capability at an attractive price. It has become a popular choice for families looking for a reliable and versatile off-road vehicle. With its rugged appearance, comfortable driving characteristics and economical efficiency, the Dacia Duster meets the requirements of a modern and affordable family SUV.

Everyday hunting SUVs

Land Rover Defender

The story of the Land Rover Defender began on the stormy Welsh coast shortly after World War II. In 1947, Maurice Wilks built the first Land Rover from a Willys Jeep abandoned by the army. Due to the lack of steel sheets, but the availability of aluminum from numerous decommissioned military aircraft, the first Land Rover was given an aluminum body - and this has not changed to this day. For the forefather of European off-road vehicle construction can still be ordered today from the local dealer. And it has remained true to its roots: irresistible off-road, angular and with a large tailgate for easy loading - that's how the British off-roader has always been. At the same time, the last generation called Defender TD4 even got comfortable seats, a six-speed transmission for gentle revving and a working heater! For the earlier Series I to III and the Defender with the diesel engines TDI and TD5, it was quite different for a long time.

Since the 2012 model year, the Land Rover has been offered exclusively with a 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine from Ford (122 hp) - for the first time also with a diesel particulate filter to meet the Euro 5 emissions standard. A special model in the range was the Blaser Edition, developed in collaboration with the Isny-based gunmaker. This limited small series was based on the 110 Station and was specially tailored for hunters. It impresses with a gun safe, a winch, working lights and a spacious roof rack.

The Land Rover Defender is not just an off-road vehicle, it's a legend. Its roots go way back, and its versatility and ruggedness make it an ideal companion for adventures in the great outdoors. With each model, Defender stays true to its heritage, providing hunters and outdoor enthusiasts with a reliable vehicle that can handle off-road challenges.

Overall, the Range Rover is an excellent top-of-the-line hunting car that combines luxury, comfort and reliability. Mercedes G-Class

The Mercedes G model offers customers the agony of choice. Either opt for exuberant luxury and immense performance at a hefty price tag, or look for an indestructible, irresistible and humble off-roader for trailer and chainsaw work. After 35 years of service, Mercedes' G model has become Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

For the luxurious boulevard experience, customers can choose the G 65 AMG, equipped with a twelve-cylinder gasoline engine and an impressive 612 horsepower. However, when it comes to green everyday life in the hunting grounds, the G 300 CDI Professional with its 184 diesel hp is a better fit. For the hunter, this one offers a functional interior similar to that of the Unimog. In fact, these rustic switches come from the G variant for the Bundeswehr, which bears the beautiful name "Wolf". The G 300 CDI Professional is always and without exception a five-door model with a three-liter, six-cylinder engine and a five-speed automatic transmission.

In civilian life, the short-wheelbase G model is only available as a convertible with a five-liter V8, but this would tend to drift into the fashionable lifestyle world. In contrast, the G 300 CDI Professional with its unique combination of three differentials (front, rear and center differential) offers unbeatable traction. Where the G-model can't go, it's better to go on foot.

The Mercedes G-model combines luxury and work ability in a unique way. Whether taking the luxury and performance route or seeking function and ruggedness for off-road work, Mercedes offers several options to meet different needs. With its impressive off-road capability and unmistakable Mercedes quality, the G model is an outstanding companion for hunters and adventurers looking for a top-of-the-line off-road vehicle.

Jeep Wrangler

The name Jeep stands for the first truly all-terrain four-wheel drive passenger car, and it certainly deserves this honor. As early as the 1940s, four GI's were able to enjoy the compact off-roader. After the end of World War II, the American Jeep spawned a number of descendants around the world. In Japan, the legendary Nissan Patrol and Toyota Land Cruiser emerged as direct offshoots of the Jeep. In the UK, the American relative also served as an inspiration.

The current Jeep Wrangler has become the best Jeep of all time. As a Rubicon model, it is even the world's most off-road capable passenger car as standard! In the field, it impresses above all with its long suspension travel, which is easy on the back, and its high axle articulation. Where Land Rover and Suzuki have their difficulties, the Jeep simply floats over them. It is available in both short and long wheelbase (Unlimited) versions.

The Jeep Wrangler's 2.8-liter diesel engine is a rugged companion that puts an honest 200 horsepower on the crankshaft. Since 2012, there has also been a new V6 gasoline engine that sends an impressive 284 hp into the race and provides plenty of power.

The Jeep Wrangler embodies the legend of the off-road capable off-roader and continues it with its outstanding design and performance. With its rugged construction, premium all-wheel-drive system and powerful engines, it's ready to take on any challenge. For hunters and adventurers, the Wrangler offers an unparalleled driving experience that is defined by comfort and off-road capability.

The Jeep Wrangler remains an icon in the world of off-road vehicles, and its reputation as a reliable and powerful companion has been passed down from generation to generation. When it comes to true off-road adventures, the Jeep Wrangler is the ultimate choice.

Pick-ups for hunters

VW Amarok

The VW Amarok is a high-performance pick-up and a popular vehicle in this category worldwide, with American (Dodge, Ford) or Japanese manufacturers (Nissan, Mitsubishi, Toyota) leading the way. In Germany, the focus is naturally very much on VW, especially since the Amarok boasts economical diesel four-cylinder engines ranging from 122 to 180 hp and an impressive eight-speed automatic transmission. The Amarok, which came about after some uncertain adventures, is the first true pickup to wear the VW logo. Older folks may remember the front-wheel-drive Golf Caddy and the VW Taro, which was available with optional all-wheel drive, but never as a crew cab. The VW logo on the Taro actually hid a Toyota Hilux. And then there's the legendary 16-inch double cab based on the VW T3 syncro, affectionately known as the "Doka," with an incredible 70 turbo diesel horsepower. Nowadays, it enjoys great popularity in hunting circles as a sought-after youngtimer! But back to the Amarok: Just like the Ford, it impresses with its chassis tuning and noise insulation at passenger car level. Nevertheless, it should not be forgotten that a leaf-sprung rigid axle at the rear (best when fully loaded) and a long wheelbase (preferably for straight-line driving) should not be neglected. Pickups are just not sports cars and not necessarily the first choice in winding mountain terrain. Nevertheless, in recent years they have evolved from sober utility vehicles to faithful companions in hunting grounds.

Ford Ranger

Pick-ups are the perfect alternative for hunters who regularly have to retrieve heavy game, especially in red deer or fallow deer hunting grounds. Anyone who drives a pick-up in the hunting grounds and was clever enough to install a winch on the cab wall can only smile with satisfaction: the shot deer on the hook, a loading ramp set up and the game is already safely on the flatbed. It is therefore no coincidence that the Federal Forestry Service in the red deer-rich northeast of the republic relies on Ford - or more precisely on the Ford Ranger.

A brand new version of the Ford Ranger has just been launched on the market, which is considered an insider's tip among off-road flatbed trucks. In addition to the powerful diesel engines with four (125 and 159 hp) and five cylinders (200 hp), the improvements to the chassis compared to previous models are particularly noteworthy. The new Ranger offers passenger car-level ride comfort and a high level of safety. ESP anti-skid protection is standard and the Ranger received top marks in the European crash test. As with most pickups, customers can choose between single and double cabs.

The Ford Ranger offers a wide range of engines and equipment options at prices ranging from just under 27,000 to just over 40,000 euros. The top-of-the-line Wildtrak model, equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and a powerful 200-horsepower diesel engine, is also available. Unlike its predecessors, the Ranger is no longer produced together with the Mazda BT 50 in Thailand, but now comes from Ford's plant in South Africa, where, incidentally, they have a wealth of experience in hunting stately cloven-hoofed game.
