Eine Legende! Die Pistole wurde bis heute über 3 Millionen mal gebaut. 1911 wurde sie als "U.S. Pistol, Caliber .45 Model of 1911" als US Dienstwaffe eingeführt. Später wurden auch die Royal Navy, die Royal Flying Corps und die Royal Air Force mit der Pistole ausgestattet. Selbst als sie als Dienstpistole 1985 vom Modell 92 abgelöst wurde, tat das ihrer Beliebtheit keinen Abbruch.
