JP Custom Buffer Springs and Silent Captured Springs The “spoon over a cheese grater” sound emitted by modern sporting rifles whenever they’re charged or fired has always been one of the AR platform’s ugly blemishes and one we’ve worked ardently to eliminate. After years of specially selecting buffer tube manufacturers based on the quality of their tubes’ interior finish, we opted to design and produce our own action springs with a perfect centerless-ground and precision-polished outside diameter. These JP Custom Buffer Springs are an inexpensive way to see exactly why we have a reputation for having the quietest, smoothest rifles on the market. Our pursuit of perfection didn’t stop with springs though and led ultimately to the creation of the patented Silent Captured Spring in 2012. Maintaining all the benefits of our polished buffer springs and proprietary LMOS™ buffer, this combination buffer-spring assembly eliminates the friction of standard buffer components resulting in outstanding smoothness and sound abatement. What’s more, the spring is removable from the assembly for custom tuning, and both the AR-15 and AR-10 versions of the JP Silent Captured Springs are functional in rifle- and carbine-length operating systems. The AR-15 version fits and functions in any gas-operated AR-15 variant, regardless of caliber. The AR-10 version should fit and function in any large-frame AR-10-type platform based on the AR-10 or LR-308 platform. The JPSCS is not compatible with any 9mm AR variant or any blowback system using a solid (weighted) carrier. GEN 2 SCS Improvements: New aluminum guide rod cuts overall weight Heavier masses translate to more buffering mass and reduced chance of bolt bounce Full correspondence between SCS masses and H1, H2 and H3 buffers Additional mass added to both AR-10 and 9mm models for better, broader function Reconfigurable between AR-15 and AR-10 models (and vice versa) GEN 2 AR-10 Silent Captured Spring Builder with Alternative Spring Pack Standard Version Includes partially assembled SCS unit, three alternative weight springs and spacer to allow for installation in both carbine-length and rifle-length buffer tubes. Weight: 5.0 oz. (final SCS unit) Compatibility The JPSCS2-10 is designed to work in standard 7-inch M16/M4-length buffer extension tubes on .308 AR-type rifles like the DPMS LR-308. Armalite .308 rifles, likewise, use these standard M16 extension tubes with rifle-length stocks, so this unit will function normally when installed with the supplied spacer. However, Armalite's .308 carbines use a slightly longer, non-standard carbine extension tube. The JPSCS2-10 can still be used with these extension tubes by installing the spacer, which must be modified to fit. Alternately, the system will function readily if the longer Armalite carbine tube is replaced with a standard 7-inch .223 carbine extension tube. The JPSCS2-10 is not compatible with the HK MR762, the Sig Sauer 716, or the Rock River Arms LAR-8 because of their longer bolt stroke and subsequently longer extension tube. The JPSCS2-10 requires is minimum depth of 4.4” which is incompatible with the DPMS GII, Remington R-25 GII and certain other rifles. It is also not compatible with the POF Revolution DI due to its slightly altered geometry or the Daniel Defense DD5 bolt carrier due to a lack of clearance for the guide rod. See our FAQ section if you have more compatibility questions. Which Silent Captured Spring do you need? SCS Buffer Retainer Pin Because the insertion and removal of the Silent Captured Spring is very difficult with a standard buffer retainer pin, we recommend removing it when installing your SCS. This leaves the SCS "free-floating" in the buffer tube. While this isn't a problem when the receivers are closed, some shooters find it objectionable. In this case, we have a custom Silent Captured Spring Buffer Retainer Pin and Spring available to retain the SCS without the snagging caused by the Mil-spec design.
