The short firearm developed by Beretta in the 1930s with the characteristic finger rest at the bottom of the grip was used during World War II in all branches of the Italian Armed Forces and was also supplied to the country's police. Over one million pistols were produced by 1980. While Fabbrica d’Armi Pietro Beretta can look back on a centuries-old tradition as a gunsmith, the company only achieved greater success with its pistols from the 1920s onwards. The Beretta M1934 with the comparatively weak cartridge of caliber 9 × 17 mm (.380 ACP) eventually became the service weapon of the Regio Esercito, the Italian Army. The almost identical Beretta M1935 in caliber 7.65 mm went to the Navy (Regia Marina) as well as the Air Force (Regia Aeronautica). The demand was so immense that only a few specimens reached the civilian market or export. This only happened after the war. After production was discontinued in 1980, a few thousand Berettas were still produced for collectors in 1990/91. The 9 mm Beretta has only a blowback action and no locked bolt like pistols with the significantly stronger Parabellum caliber 9 × 19 mm. The ammunition used in the Beretta M1934, 9 × 17 mm, is indeed less powerful than the Parabellum cartridge, but the bullet effect is sufficient for a self-defense weapon. In addition, the muzzle velocity of 295 m/s is below the speed of sound, which is why a suppressor can be used without special ammunition.
