The rifle Portugal Mod. 1904 is historically known as the Mauser-Vergueiro Model 1904 (often officially called Espingarda Portugueza M1904). It was manufactured by the legendary German Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) in Berlin for the Portuguese military. The combination of the designation Model 1904, the caliber 8x57JS, and the status as a single loader tells a fascinating, three-stage transformation story. The rifle was developed by the Portuguese infantry officer José Alberto Vergueiro.  It is not a pure Mauser 98, but a brilliant hybrid. The magazine and safety come from Mauser, but the more delicate and very smooth-running bolt combines elements of the Gewehr 1888. The weapon was delivered in 1904 as a long infantry rifle in the rather weak Portuguese proprietary caliber 6.5x58 mm Vergueiro. It was used, among other things, in World War I in Portugal’s African colonies. In 1937, Portugal converted its army to the modern German Mauser system 98k in the strong standard caliber 8x57IS (7.92x57 mm). However, since huge stocks of the old Model 1904 were still in depots, a comprehensive overhaul program was launched in 1939. The long rifles were radically shortened to carbine length. They received completely new barrels in the standard caliber 8x57JS. The old caliber “6.5” was usually overstamped or crossed out on the system. This modernized service weapon was henceforth called M1904/39. The reason your rifle is a single loader today lies in the German legal changes of the 1970s. The “Yellow WBK” of 1972: With the old German Weapons Act of 1972, the “Yellow Weapons Ownership Card” was introduced for sport shooters. At that time, only single-loader long guns (without magazine function) could be acquired completely unrestricted and without prior entry on this card.The weapon is a fascinating piece of time history from the Berlin arms manufactory DWM from 1904. Although the rifle was mechanically blocked as a single loader in Germany in the 1970s, it has preserved its visual historical integrity 100% (very rare). The military stock is uncut. The historical stamping (the royal coat of arms) is flawless. It is the penultimate weapon of the B-number block.The weapon comes from an inherited collection that I am gradually dissolving after careful consideration. It is not easy to part with these pieces, but they should go into the hands of people who appreciate their quality and history.The rifle can of course be viewed and inspected on site by appointment.
