The Freedom Arms Premier Grade revolver (officially designated Model 83) in the monumental caliber .454 Casull is considered the absolute gold standard for large caliber revolvers in the firearms world. They combine the classic aesthetics of a single-action revolver in the style of the Colt Peacemaker with state-of-the-art high-performance metallurgy and uncompromising precision. This Freedom Arms is the Premier Grade version (the luxury variant with high-gloss polished finish and rosewood grips) and was built around 1996.The history of the firearm is inseparably linked to the development of its cartridge. The ingenious gunsmith Dick Casull experimented together with Duane Marsh and Jack Fullmer to increase the performance of the old .45 Colt. He lengthened the case, strengthened the walls, and created the .454 Casull. However, none of the then-series revolvers (neither from Colt nor Ruger) withstood the enormous gas pressure of up to 65,000 psi (approx. 4,500 bar) – the cylinders regularly burst during tests. Casull had to build his own extremely reinforced 5-shot cylinders from special steel. To produce a tailor-made platform for this cartridge in series, Dick Casull founded the company Freedom Arms in Freedom, Wyoming, together with Wayne Baker in 1978/1979. The first factory-made single-action five-shooter in caliber .454 Casull left the factory. This firearm completely redefined handgun hunting and took the title of the then "strongest handgun in the world." Later, this original platform received the model designation Model 83. Freedom Arms offered the revolver in two basic versions (Field Grade and Premier Grade), with mechanical tolerances identical and perfect in both. The purely functional hunting and utility variant with a matte, sandblasted surface and grips made of simple wood or plastic. The absolute luxury version is the “Premier Grade.” It is characterized by a finely brushed, high-gloss polished finish of the heat-treated 17-4 PH stainless steel. The finishing requires about 6 hours of additional handwork. It also features noble impregnated rosewood grips and comes with a lifetime warranty.Because the Freedom Arms revolver has phenomenal inherent precision due to its tight tolerances and the so-called “line-bored” cylinder chambers (each chamber is drilled exactly in line with the barrel), it is also extremely successful in sporting silhouette and precision shooting. The Premier Grade sport sights offer finely ratcheted, micrometer-precise adjustable rear sight (for elevation and windage). An interchangeable front sight sits on a massive ramp to adapt the sight picture to different loadings and distances. The frame is factory-prepared for stable mounting of scope or red dot sight bases without weakening the system. For stability reasons, the cylinder is five-shot. The cylinder walls are therefore significantly thicker at critical points than on classic six-shooters. The gap between cylinder and barrel is minimally fitted to minimize gas loss and fully utilize the energy. The revolver features a modern transfer bar safety system, so unlike old Colts, it can be safely carried with a fully loaded cylinder. The revolver can also easily shoot the milder, precise, and cheaper .45 Colt (or .45 Schofield). Many shooters also use optional interchangeable cylinders for .45 ACP or .45 Win Mag. The firearm comes from an inherited collection that I am gradually dissolving after careful consideration. It is not easy to part with these pieces, but they should go into the hands of people who appreciate their quality and history.
The revolver can of course be viewed and inspected on site by appointment. I place great value on transparency so you can personally verify the condition of the firearm. The price is negotiable. However, I ask that you remain realistic.Since I am liquidating the entire collection, more interesting and high-quality firearms will be offered in the coming weeks.
