Liquidation of my collection: Mauser Model Peru 1909 bolt-action rifle Cal. 7.65x53 Arg

The Mauser Modelo 1909 Peru bolt-action rifle is a fascinating sister weapon to the better-known Argentine model. It was ordered in the same period in caliber 7.65x53 mm (7.65 mm Argentine/Belgian), but shows historically and technically distinctive differences that make it one of the closest export copies of the German Reich service rifle.Between 1910 and 1914, the Peruvian government purchased an estimated 50,000 units of the 1909 model directly from Germany. Unlike the Argentine DWM rifles, the majority of the Peruvian contract was manufactured directly by the Mauser weapons factory in Oberndorf am Neckar.While the Argentine 1909s mostly saw peacetime use, the Peruvian Mausers had to endure real combat. They were intensively used in the Leticia Incident (1932–1933) against Colombia as well as in the Ecuadorian-Peruvian War (1941).Just like in Argentina, selected late reorderings from the 1930s (often in excellent condition) remained in service as ceremonial weapons in the presidential palace in Lima well into the second half of the 20th century.Although both weapons are based on the Gewehr 98 system, the Peru model differs in essential details:While Argentina demanded a flat curve sight, Peru retained the distinctive German “Lange-Visier” (often called “roller coaster” or “ski jump” sight by collectors due to its curved shape). It was precisely tuned to the modern pointed bullets of the 7.65 cartridge.A technical peculiarity of the Peru Mauser is the small barrel thread diameter (Small Shank) despite the large system ring (Large Ring). Peru explicitly required this so that the barrels could theoretically remain interchangeable with the older Peruvian Mauser models from 1891.The Peruvian model has a longer cocking piece as well as an aspherical shape of the chamber rod knob.Due to tropical deployments and heavy use in South America, many Peruvian rifles show scarred case rims, arsenal repairs on the wood, or reblued actions. The Peruvian arsenals prioritized function over aesthetics, which is why the state emblem was often partially erased during overhauls.It comes from an inherited collection that I am gradually dissolving after careful consideration. It is not easy to part with these pieces, but they should go into the hands of people who appreciate their quality and history.Pieces in this condition are very rare due to the Peruvian war use (see pictures).The rifle can of course be viewed and inspected on site by appointment.
