The Brazilian Mauser Model 1908 in caliber 7x57mm is a historical prime example of the era of the so-called "South America Mausers." It is technically based directly on the legendary German Gewehr 98, but is considered one of the most elegant and best-crafted military rifles of the early 20th century due to its manufacturing quality. At the beginning of the 20th century, the major nations Brazil, Argentina, and Chile were experiencing an economic boom and an intense military arms race. After Chile and Argentina had already introduced older Mauser models (Mod. 1891 and 1895), the Republic of Brazil wanted to acquire the most modern available technology. In 1908, the Brazilian army decided on the brand-new German Mauser 98 system with a cylindrical bolt. Since the Mauser factories in Oberndorf were fully booked at that time, the production order was handed over to DWM (Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken Berlin).Although the Model 1908 is mechanically a Gewehr 98, it differs in distinctive points from the German service rifle.Brazil did not choose the German standard cartridge 8x57 IS, but the more modern, fast-flying 7x57mm. This cartridge offered a flatter trajectory, struck extremely precisely on target, and produced noticeably less recoil, making it popular with militaries worldwide.Instead of the bulky German "Lange-Visier," the Brazilians requested a slim, conventional tangent rear sight (scaled from 300 to 2000 meters). The rifles for Brazil were manufactured with extremely high quality. The receiver head and bolt remained mirror bright, while the barrel was deep black blued. Fine European walnut was used as stock wood.An original Model 1908 is easy for collectors to identify. On the case head is a deep, detailed embossing of the Brazilian national coat of arms. On the left receiver side is prominently stamped in capital letters: DEUTSCHE WAFFEN- UND MUNITIONSFABRIKEN. BERLIN.It comes from an inherited collection that I am gradually dissolving after careful consideration. However, I ask that you remain realistic.Since I am dissolving the entire collection, more interesting and high-quality firearms will be offered in the coming weeks.
