I am parting with this beautiful piece.Historically interesting is this rifle as it went to the Spanish Republicans."After the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, the Republicans turned to several states, including the Soviet Union, with a request for arms deliveries. The Soviet Union seized the opportunity to sell old stockpiles. At least 18,000 Winchester M1895 rifles were shipped to Bilbao in two deliveries in the fall of 1936. After the victory of the Francoists, the weapons of both warring parties were collected and refurbished. The metal parts were freshly blued, the stocks were refurbished, and usually the Russian proof marks were removed. A mark was placed on the buttstock, in a bomb from which flames rise, the letters MP above the number 8. In the 1950s, many of these refurbished rifles were sold on the American collector market."
