Powder flasks, also known as powder horns or powder canisters, were used for the storage of black powder (gunpowder). From these containers, the black powder, which served as the propellant, was filled into the barrel of a muzzleloader. Powder flasks are not only used for storing propellant powder but also for measuring a specific amount of powder. For this purpose, there is a volumetric dosing device in the neck of the flask, where a slider separates a part of the neck from the rest of the flask. By sealing the flask opening with the thumb and simultaneously pressing an external button connected to the slider, a quantity of powder is brought into the front part of the neck during the subsequent tilting motion, where the flask opening points downwards. After releasing the slider button, the storage chamber of the flask is separated from the portion of powder in the neck by the slider. This allows the shooter to introduce the now contained amount of powder through the muzzle of the barrel into the weapon.
