Since the 't' in Nagant is silent, the revolver is called Наган (Nagan) in Russian. The military designation is 7.62-mm revolver Nagan, model 1895. The weapon, originally manufactured in Liège at the "Fabrique d'Armes Émile & Léon Nagant," soon found a market in other countries. Sweden, and later France and Poland, purchased revolvers from Liège. In 1895, the Russian Empire adopted the model as the official service or ordnance weapon for the police and military.The Nagant M1895 is a SA/DA revolver ("Single Action" for enlisted personnel, "Double Action" for officers) with a closed frame in caliber 7.62 mm. Its cylinder holds 7 rounds and cannot be swung out. To load and unload, a loading gate on the right side behind the cylinder must be opened, through which the cartridges are ejected or loaded one chamber at a time. The revolver uses the specially developed Nagant cartridge in caliber 7.62 mm.The mechanism of the Nagant revolver has a feature that distinguishes it from many other revolvers. When firing the weapon, the gap between the cylinder and barrel is sealed gas-tight. Pulling the trigger not only rotates the cylinder to the next chamber but also pushes the cylinder against the barrel's shoulder before the shot is fired. This causes the protruding mouth of the cartridge to be pressed into the rear of the barrel, which is adjusted in diameter. This creates a seal between the case and the barrel when firing. Special ammunition is required for this, where the bullet sits completely within the longer-than-usual cases.
