Manufactured in the USA for Allied forces during World War II, this model became known millions of times as the “Victory Revolver.” After the war, S&W renamed it back to M&P (Military Police) and rebranded it as Model 10 in the 1950s. The M&P (also referred to as Pre-Model 10) went into regular commercial production around 1946. It was produced in both nickel and blued steel. The Smith & Wesson Victory model revolver was delivered in 1946 in two shipments to the police in the American sector. In the West Berlin police, the revolver was referred to among other things as American Army Revolver S&W caliber 9mm or Revolver Smith&Wesson, caliber 9mm. The S&W M&P Military Revolver was produced from 1942 to 1944. Its name “Smith&Wesson Victory Model” was given to the revolver by the serial number starting with a “V,” although some of the first models did not receive a "V".During World War II, the following countries received the revolver due to the Lend-Lease program (a law to promote the defense of the United States): England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. The officially denazified German police was supposed to protect a population in distress, especially in the cities, while simultaneously overpowering looters and robbers. Initially, they were equipped only with wooden batons. The US military administration quickly recognized the dilemma: the police had to be rearmed despite prevailing concerns in light of the crime situation.
