The vz.27 was developed by Josef Nickl on behalf of the ČZ factories from the pistol vz. 24. Until the annexation of Czechoslovakia in 1939, no large quantities could be delivered. Subsequently, the weapon was manufactured under German control. While other ČZ models were soon discontinued, production of this robust weapon was pushed forward. Before World War II, it achieved only limited success; in the first years of production, fewer than 15,000 units were sold. During the German occupation alone, about half a million units were produced. The CZ27 was mainly supplied to the German Wehrmacht, but was also manufactured for the Kriegsmarine, the police, and in smaller quantities for civilian use. The Wehrmacht weapons bore the proof mark WaA76, those of the police the eagle/K proof mark, and those of the Kriegsmarine two variants of the eagle/M proof mark. Civilian weapons were marked with a Czech lion and the year. The vz. 27 is a recoil-operated pistol with a fixed barrel. Compared to the predecessor model vz. 24, a simple mass lock suffices due to the weaker ammunition; a locking mechanism is not necessary. The weapon has a direct trigger, and the hammer protrudes only slightly from the end of the slide. The manual safety has interesting features: The safety lever on the left side of the grip is pressed down, blocking both the trigger and the slide; it is disengaged by pressing the button located at the bottom of the lever.
