The company was founded in 1852 by business partners Horace Smith and Daniel Baird Wesson under the name Smith & Wesson, Norwich, Connecticut.After the partnership began in 1852, Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson developed and patented a magazine pistol. The timing of the development of cartridge revolvers proved to be favorable, as the Civil War, which broke out five years later, created a strong demand for "Smith & Wesson" products. After the end of the Civil War, Smith & Wesson was able to establish itself in the civilian market with its Model No 3. In 1964, the Wesson family sold the company to the conglomerate Bangor Punta. The revolver was available in blued or nickel-plated versions and featured fixed sights as well as a six-shot cylinder suitable for the low-pressure .32 cartridge. Although it was overshadowed by the more widely available .38 Special J-frame revolvers like the Model 36, the 31-1 appealed to users who valued low recoil, low weight, and a slimmer profile for concealed carry or as a backup weapon. Its forged construction and reliable double-action trigger contributed to consistent performance with various .32 S&W Long cartridges.
