In the final phase, the lengths averaged 520 mm. The center of gravity of the weapon moved closer to the blade shoulder. Refined forging techniques and damasking allowed for lighter blade designs. The tang was initially centered and moved towards the cutting edge in the second half of the 8th century. The blades were decorated with decorative grooves and fullers. The tangs shortened again to stubs, and the applied hilts were up to a third longer than the tang. The scabbards were very simply designed compared to the broad saxes, limited to small iron eyelets on the back. Langsaxes appeared particularly in the Saxon-influenced territories such as Westphalia and Lower Saxony as the main weapon alone and not in combination with Spatha. In the Frisian but also Frankish-influenced regions in southern Germany, the Langsaxes were constructed more simply and appeared as a secondary weapon alongside the Spatha. While the short sax was handled as a dagger-like thrusting knife, the narrow sax and broad sax were more suitable for slashing use like machetes.
