It was developed by the firearms designer John Moses Browning and is one of the most widely used pistols ever. For decades, the Browning High Power could confidently be called the best combat pistol in the world. Work on this weapon began in 1922 when the French government issued a contract for the procurement of a new standard pistol for its armed forces. The specifications of the contract required a pistol with a magazine capacity of 15 rounds. The High Power pistol had a single-action trigger and the proven locking mechanism of the Browning system, where the barrel is not rigidly fixed but briefly slides back during the loading cycle. The Browning Hi-Power has been continuously developed by FN since its introduction. The pistols were originally manufactured in two models: a "standard model" with fixed sights and an "adjustable sight model" ("artillery version") with a tangential rear sight and a slot for attaching a wooden shoulder stock. The adjustable sights are still available on commercial versions of the Hi-Power, although production of the shoulder stock was discontinued during World War II. When the pistol finally became market-ready in 1935, the French government did not choose the model; instead, it was adopted by the military and police of Belgium. The potential of the High Power was recognized in many other states as well, and the weapon was incorporated into their equipment. When German troops occupied Belgium at the beginning of World War II, production continued under their supervision. The weapon was then designated as pistol 640 (b) in the German military and primarily issued to the Waffen-SS. Until the introduction of the SIG Sauer P226 and the Glock 17 Gen 4, the High Power was part of the standard armament of the British armed forces as "Pistol L9A1." It is still in use there to some extent. It is also still in service with the Belgian military. In the Austrian gendarmerie, it was replaced by the Glock 17 after 1994.
